What we collect, and why

  • When you buy: your email address, the order number, amount, currency, payment status and the IP address used. We need these to deliver the game, send your download link, keep the books and prevent fraud.
  • When you download: which file was downloaded, when, and from which IP address, to enforce the download limit and spot abuse of links (a link used from many different networks is paused until you contact us).
  • Demo downloads are counted: which file, when, and a one-way hash of your network (the first three parts of an IPv4 address or the first 48 bits of IPv6, salted). Your IP address itself is not stored for demo downloads.
  • When you apply to be featured in the game (featured.php): the names, email address, links and idea you send, and a one-way hash of your network against spam. We use them only to answer and work out your feature, and delete them 24 months after our last contact.
  • The website sets one functional cookie after checkout (sct_order, 7 days) so the thank-you page can show your download button and, in the first 24 hours after payment, your activation code (in case the purchase email lands in spam). It holds the order number and a random code made at checkout, so only the browser that paid sees them. No tracking or advertising cookies, no analytics. If you pick a language for this site or close its language suggestion, your browser remembers that choice itself (local storage, not a cookie); it is never sent to us.
  • The game itself stores saves and settings only on your own computer. At start it checks for a newer version by downloading a small public version file from this site (no account, no game data; you can switch this off in Settings). Like any web request, our server sees your IP address for that moment; we do not store it with anything else. On Windows, "Update now" downloads the new installer from this site; for the full game it uses the download link from your purchase (stored on your computer by the installer), and that download counts like one from the download page.
  • Game summaries (optional, off unless you say yes in the game — Settings, or the question after your first year): once a year in the game and when a game ends, your game sends a short summary of that game to help us balance it: the game version, language, rules and difficulty, the in-game year, and your company's figures of that year (market share, revenue, cash, research, stations, rank) with the other companies' shares. It carries a random number made for that one game, so years of the same game can be put together; no name, no email address, no device id, and nothing that links two of your games. We keep these summaries for two years. Sending is rate-limited like the rest of the site (the IP address is kept for at most 24 hours for that). You can switch it off at any time in Settings.
  • Linking the game to your purchase (for in-game updates and the leaderboards; the game itself plays without it): when the game links itself (through the installer, the "Link to my game" button or your activation code), we store a random number your game makes for that computer (not a hardware id), a one-way hash of a secret code your game keeps, the leaderboard name played on it (if any), and when it was linked and last seen. This is kept with your order, so you can see and unlink your computers on your download page, and so we can spot a download link or code that is shared far beyond one purchase (we then replace it and email you the new one). For that we also note the random number of a computer that was refused (all places taken, the link paused, or a computer unlinked earlier trying the link again); those notes are deleted after 30 days. A computer you unlink, or whose purchase is refunded, can no longer take part; 90 days after a computer is unlinked, its secret and the leaderboard name played on it are deleted from that record; only its random number and when it was linked, last seen and unlinked stay with your order, so an old download link cannot link it again. A leaderboard name that no linked computer holds any more is deleted with it. Requests are rate-limited like the rest of the site (the IP address is kept for at most 24 hours for that).
  • Your leaderboard name (optional, chosen in the game when you pick your CEO): we store only that name, a random player number and a one-way hash of a secret code your game keeps, so only your game can rename or delete it. No IP address is stored with it. Since version 0.9.4 only a computer linked to a purchase can enter the leaderboards, so the name is linked to that purchase, and through it to your order and email address (see above): that lets you use the same name on your other linked computers. Your email address and order are never shown with your name, and never leave our server. The name is shown publicly on the leaderboards. You can delete it at any time in the game (Settings) or by mail; it is then removed from our server at once. Please do not use your full real name. Requests to register or change a name are rate-limited like the rest of the site (the IP address is kept for at most 24 hours for that).

Who else sees it

MultiSafepay B.V. processes your payment as an independent controller under its own privacy statement. Our hosting provider stores the data on servers in the EU. Amazon Web Services EMEA SARL sends our emails (Amazon SES, Ireland region) as our processor: it handles your email address and the message we send you, and nothing else. We do not sell or share your data with anyone else.

How long

Order data is kept for 7 years because Dutch tax law requires it. Rate-limit records are deleted after 24 hours.

Your rights

You can ask to see, correct or delete your data (where the law allows), or object to its use: mail support@starcorptycoon.com. You can also complain to the Dutch data protection authority (Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens).
